In 1996 I went to the AFL CIO convention in New York City as in every Union Convention there was a protest and this Protest walked throught the Garment District and Who Was the Leader of the Protest the US Secretary of Labor Robert Reich althought I enjoy the Protest even and walked of the Streets of New York City Flashing Victory Signs to Asian Women working as contact labor for what is left of Garment District that Robert Reich the Sity Secretary Of Labor had no Business Leading Worker Protests. This guy is very smart but he uses poor judgement I say American is not broken and I been a Democrat all my life and I agree with the late Ronald Regan it is always morining in America.

Nice post. I live in what I consider a "middle class" suburb. Yet the last 5 years I've seen friends and family move across the country looking for work, neighbors having their houses foreclosed, people without health insurance, and an ever-increasing skepticism of our representatives. We don't expect the government to fix all of our problems. However, we do expect them to assist us when they spend billions and trillions on waste. Maybe they should try to track down the $9 billion in the Iraq war appropriations that mysteriously "disappreared." (Lol, sorry, had to throw that in there). But seriously, stuff like that makes me think that the federal government is able to do much more.

The immediate impact we've felt here is the loss of jobs from the auto industry. Living in metro Detroit, the auto industry is, or should I say, was, our main source for jobs. Poor sales, gas prices, outsourcing, you name it, it all hit us hard. Do I feel bitter? Heck Yeah! lol

I've been reading a little book "To the new intellectual" by Ayn Rand. This may seem surprising, given my lifelong liberal leanings, but I do subscribe to the notion that one can better defend oneself if one takes the trouble to know one's enemy. Surprisingly, I find much to agree with in the first few pages, but already I can see where she is heading with her glorification of capitalism and those who drive it. I think J.K. Galbraith probably had her in mind when he said the words that are the header on my blog, "The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy: that is the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness."
:

"The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy: that is the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness."

-I love it! Great quote and very meaningful.

That quote can apply to so many situations. In my view, selfishness and arrogance are similar, and unfortunately, that describes most of what I see from the conservative governance in this country.
